Shop clerk: Oprah racism claims 'untrue,' a 'horror'

Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah Winfrey's disturbing story from last Friday about being told by a Swiss store's shop assistant that a handbag she wanted to look at was something she could not afford, is being called "untrue" by the sales clerk in question.

The sales clerk, whose name was only given as "Adriana N." told the Swiss newspaper SonntagsBlick that Winfrey's story "absolutely untrue."

"I even asked her if she wanted to take a closer look at the bag. Mrs. (sic) Winfrey looked around in the store again, but did not say anything further," Adriana told the paper. "Then she went downstairs with her companion. My colleague held the door open for them. They were not even five minutes in our store."

As Winfrey told the story recently to both?Entertainment Tonight and?Larry King, she wanted to look at a $38,000 handbag but was reportedly told it was "too expensive" for her. According to Winfrey, the clerk then opted to show her a cheaper line of handbags. Winfrey took offense, presuming that she was being offered less-expensive bags because she was black.?

"That's not true," Adriana said. "That is absurd. I would never say anything like that to a customer."

The store was later revealed as Trois Pomme, in Zurich. The owner of the chain of stores, Trudy G?tz, apologized publicly to Winfrey, as did the Swiss tourism office.?

The accusation of racism has turned Adriana's world upside-down, she said. "I have not been able to sleep for days. I feel as if I was in the middle of a hurricane. Totally powerless, also helpless. What is happening is horror."

Winfrey and Adriana clearly have differing opinions about what happened in that store visit, not just in outcome, but details. For one thing, Winfrey told Entertainment Tonight that she had left her hotel and gone to the store alone: "It's just me, by myself (out shopping); Stedman (Graham, Winfrey's longtime companion) wasn't there, and Gayle (King, Winfrey's friend) was not there, no friends, I'm out by myself."

But Adriana is clear: Winfrey "was accompanied by a friend, it might also have been her bodyguard, I don't know. He held the door open for her."

Regardless, Adriana says she doesn't understand why Winfrey is talking about the encounter. "She is so powerful and I am only a salesperson. I did not harm anyone. I also don't understand why she has to exploit this so broadly on TV."?

Adriana, who says she is Italian, did not recognize Winfrey when she entered the store, but says that "would not have made a difference. We try really hard to meet all people with the same respect and to treat everybody equal. If somebody asks me to show an item, I always present it."

Meanwhile, while on the red carpet for a screening of "Lee Daniels' The Butler" Monday, Winfrey spoke about the surprising way the anecdote had become headline news. "I'm really sorry that it got blown up," she said. "I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland."

And on Twitter last Friday, she tried defusing the incident with some humor:

So what could Adriana have done differently? "I still don't know," she said. "Because to date, I do not know what I could have done wrong."?

Still, she says she would apologize to Winfrey.

"It was a misunderstanding," she said. "I surely did not want to offend Mrs. Winfrey on purpose. I hope this nightmare is over soon."

GreenTech Automotive - Business Insider

greentech terry mcaulliffe bill clinton haley barbour

AP

Bill Clinton speaks at the opening of GreenTech automotive. Close friend and company chairman Terry McAulliffe sits in the background.

TUNICA, Miss. (AP) ? Four years ago, a startup car company announced with great fanfare big plans for the Mississippi Delta: Using money from foreign investors and other sources, it would build a massive auto plant to churn out a new line of energy-efficient cars and bring thousands of jobs to the area.

It seemed like a win for everyone involved. The foreign investors who plunked down at least $500,000 for the venture would get the opportunity to stay in the United States and a path to citizenship, an impoverished area of Mississippi would get some desperately needed jobs, the state would generate tax revenues, and the political leaders involved would be able to tout job-creation prowess.

Today, the place where the plant was to be remains mostly vacant except for a temporary construction trailer. The company ? GreenTech Automotive Inc. ? is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the probe is reverberating well beyond Mississippi's borders, bringing scrutiny to a Virginia gubernatorial candidate and the company run by the brother of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"Back in 2009, it was a big deal," said 21-year-old casino employee Perry Turner, who lives across the highway from GreenTech's mostly empty site in rural Tunica County. "I haven't heard much else about it."

Some analysts say it was a risky business plan and foreign investors may have been more interested in an easy way to get a visa and a chance at citizenship than trying to support a venture that had a good chance to turn a profit or create jobs.

In October 2009, GreenTech's owner, Chinese businessman Xiaolin "Charles" Wang, unveiled four prototype cars during a flashy ceremony and promised to build a $2 billon plant in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.

Besides backing from foreign investors, some 100 acres were donated by Tunica County's economic development foundation, at a cost of $1.8 million, and in 2011 the state gave a $3 million loan toward site preparation. For a time, the company's chairman was politically connected heavyweight Terry McAuliffe, a close adviser to both former President Bill Clinton and his wife, a former Democratic national chairman. McAuliffe is now a contender for Virginia governor.

The cars were supposed to start rolling off the assembly line in 2012. The company now hopes to start producing cars next year. And while they say they still plan to build a plant in Tunica County, all that was on the land on a recent afternoon was a construction trailer, a few pieces of equipment and a few workers strolling around.

The company instead now uses a former elevator factory 30 miles away in Horn Lake. A McAuliffe spokesman said about 100 small electric vehicles were built by the time McAuliffe resigned from the company in December. The thousands of promised jobs have yet to materialize.

"It takes time to build a brand new company in a capital-intensive industry like electric vehicles, and we will not cut corners on quality or safety as we progress. We have a plan. The plan is working. We're sticking to it," GreenTech said in a statement.

The company said it has more than 100 workers and "once production is ramped up" should employ at least 350 ? the same number of jobs required under the state loan agreement.

Jeff Rent, a spokesman for the Mississippi Development Authority, said the company has assured the agency they're on track to meet hiring goals.

Industry analysts say the company faces hurdles to succeed.

"A brand-new electric car company without an established U.S. partner, or global partner, is a lofty goal," said Joe McCabe, president of AutomotiveCompass, which forecasts global vehicle and power train production. "They're one of several other electric manufacturing startups entering a tough market. They have to come with something better to the game, not just an also-ran."

Other analysts say GreenTech exposes problems with a program used to attract foreign investors ? known as the EB-5 visa program.

David North, a fellow with the Center for Immigration Studies, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., that examines immigration policies, said the foreign investors in the EB-5 program are primarily motivated by a desire to get green cards for them and their families, not to find lucrative propositions.

"So this EB-5 program by its very nature is often linked to second- and third-class investments," he said.

Under the EB-5 visa program, foreigners can invest $500,000 or $1 million in American business ventures depending on the location of the project. In GreenTech's case, the program called for $500,000 investments.

The EB-5 program is capped at 10,000 investors a year, and had 6,106 applicants in 2012.

Under the rules of the program, each EB-5 investment must create at least 10 jobs. In exchange, the foreign investors get to stay in the United States for up to two years and can then apply for full citizenship, a speedier process than afforded to most other immigrants who must wait five years after establishing residency before being eligible for citizenship.

The federal U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' Immigrant Investor Program also designates so-called "regional centers," companies that have authorization to handle the company's EB-5 investments ? and can collect thousands of dollars in fees from foreign investors to process their visa applications.

In this case, Gulf Coast Funds Management ? a company headed by Tony Rodham, Hillary Clinton's brother ? is the designated "regional center" and has raised 45.5 million from foreign investors for GreenTech, according to an internal immigration services document obtained by The Associated Press that outlines background information about the firm. Rodham has not responded to phone messages at Gulf Coast Funds or a message sent to an email address listed in government reports submitted to the government.

Hybrid Kinetic Motors, a predecessor to GreenTech, paid Gulf Coast $250,000 for assistance in setting up the EB-5 program, according to a lawsuit between Wang and his former partner. Regional centers collect additional fees for processing the investments.

Of GreenTech's 91 foreign investors, only one has received permanent residency status, according to an internal immigration services document obtained by the AP that outlines background information about the firm; the name of the investor was not disclosed.

Simone Williams of GreenTech said "every one of our first two rounds of EB-5 investors was approved and their investment was released to GreenTech Automotive." But she did not provide the number of investors.

She said the government's pace in approving foreign investors has slowed down plans to start construction at its Tunica County facility.

Christopher Bentley, spokesman for immigration services, said in an email he couldn't comment on details on the plans by GreenTech and Gulf Coast Funds.

In May, the SEC subpoenaed unspecified documents from GreenTech and banking records from Gulf Coast, according to nearly 100 pages of documents recently released by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.

The documents indicate GreenTech allegedly improperly guaranteed investors returns on their money. GreenTech has acknowledged receiving the subpoenas and said the company is cooperating with investigators.

The Department of Homeland Security inspector general also is investigating allegations that USCIS director Alejandro Mayorkas? President Barack Obama's pick for the No. 2 slot at DHS ? used his influence to help Gulf Coast obtain a foreign investor visa for a Chinese executive.

Since the 2009 groundbreaking, GreenTech has changed its business plan. Instead of producing versions of the four prototypes it showcased then, including hybrid cars, it now says its plant, when built, will have the capacity to make 30,000 electric vehicles each year, including a sedan and small electric vehicles known as MyCars. It now aims to have the first ones rolling off the line in Tunica by April.

In the meantime, GreenTech has been using space at an old elevator factory in Horn Lake, Miss., where the company says it's building MyCars, neighborhood electric cars that are a cross between a golf cart and a full-sized vehicle. It's not clear how many of the MyCars ? which are not legal to drive on U.S. highways ? have been sold.

GreenTech recently declined an AP request to tour the Horn Lake facility. The company won't say how many MyCars it has produced or sold, but says it has "international distribution agreements for 30,000 vehicles over the next three years."

Local officials haven't lost hope it will all still happen as advertised.

"I still look at this as an ongoing economic development project," said Lyn Arnold, president and CEO of the Tunica County Chamber of Commerce.

Some residents are ready to see results, like 33-year-old waitress Shaquita Pickett, who said a car plant would be a big boost for the county.

"We really do need one here because we need better jobs," she said.

N.Y. police's 'stop-and-frisk' tactics violate rights, judge rules

By Bernard Vaughan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York City Police Department's controversial "stop and frisk" crime-fighting tactics violate the U.S. Constitution, a federal judge ruled on Monday.

U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin said the city police adopted a policy of "indirect racial profiling" by targeting racially defined groups for stops.

The practice resulted in disproportionate, discriminatory stopping of blacks and Hispanics that the city's highest officials "turned a blind eye" toward.

"No one should live in fear of being stopped whenever he leaves his home to go about the activities of daily life," Scheindlin wrote in her opinion.

The class action was considered the broadest legal challenge to stop and frisk, a tactic in which city police stop people they suspect of unlawful activity and frisk those they suspect are carrying weapons.

Scheindlin's decision follows an exhaustive nine-week trial that pitted the NYPD's interest in keeping New York's crime rate down against black and Latino plaintiffs who felt discriminated against. Scheindlin presided over the trial without a jury.

As part of her ruling, Scheindlin ordered the appointment of an independent monitor to oversee compliance with other remedies she ordered.

The NYPD did not immediately comment on the decision.

Japan's Debt Exceeds 1 Quadrillion Yen as Abe Mulls Tax Rise

2013-08-10 ? bloomberg.com

``The world's heaviest debt burden will weigh on Abe when he decides next month whether to implement a two-step plan to double the tax on consumers in a nation with ballooning welfare costs. While boosting the levy would drag on growth, Moody's Investors Service yesterday warned that a worsening of finances would erode confidence in government bonds.'' -- This is total nonsense. If he really wants to stimulate the economy by printing, he can't "take with the other hand" with tax increases. Does ANYONE know what they are doing over there?

NY library selling 22,000 vinyl LPs for $1 each

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hundreds of vinyl-record aficionados descended on the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts on Friday for a rare sale of LPs from the library's collection.

The three-day sale of 22,000 records started Thursday. It's intended to clear out space and to raise money for future acquisitions and for preserving the library's collection, curator Jonathan Hiam said.

The sale is the first of its kind since 1984, Hiam said. All the albums for sale are duplicates of others owned by the library, which is at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. All are priced to sell at $1, even boxed sets.

Bradley Coufal was among 70 people waiting in line before Friday's sale started.

"I just like am an avid dollar bin record seeker," Coufal said. "When I heard there were 22,000 records I was excited."

Inside, the records were packed into boxes in no particular order, here the soundtrack of the movie "New York, New York," there Joan Sutherland singing a Bellini opera. Classical music predominated, but jazz, show tunes and other genres were represented.

Donald Cleveland, a reissue producer, was looking for specific album covers that he could photograph for CD or digital reissues.

"I've found a few items," Cleveland said. "A Brazilian piece, a couple of soundtracks, a blues album ? none of which I was looking for but I'm happy nonetheless."

Buyers said CDs and MP3s can't compare with the sound of vinyl.

"Not listening to records is like not drinking wine," said Brian Belott, a visual artist shopping for "Mozart, Bach, Hindemith, Poulenc."

Eli Zimmerman, a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Opera, examined a recording by pianist Artur Schnabel but rejected it as too scratched.

Plenty of other LPs went into a box at his feet.

"Yesterday I bought 30, 40 records," Zimmerman said. "Today I'll probably buy about the same. And I'll try to sneak them under cover of night so that my wife doesn't see that I have gotten more records. I obviously have a record addiction."

Movie review: Disney cranks out predictable product in 'Planes' | The ...

This publicity image released by Disney Enterprises, Inc. shows Dusty, voiced by Dane Cook, in a scene from the animated film, "Planes." (AP Photo/ Disney Enterprises, Inc.)

The label "World of Cars" started appearing on toys tied to the Disney/Pixar movie ? so it?s appropriate to see it at the beginning of "Planes," which feels more like a product than a movie.

In "Planes" (which, tellingly, does not carry Pixar?s name in the marketing), Dusty Crophopper (voiced by Dane Cook) is a plucky cropduster with big dreams of racing in an around-the-world flying rally. He trains hard, working with Skipper (voiced by Stacy Keach), a battle-weary World War II-era P-39, to qualify. During the big race, Dusty must contend with the arrogant defending champion, Ripslinger (voiced by Roger Craig Smith), and a slew of international rivals. Director Klay Hall and writer Jeffrey M. Howard (veterans of Disney?s Tinkerbell franchise) fly through the familiar landmarks of the "follow your dreams" animated playbook. There are some jarring tone shifts that are a bit much for the kiddie crowd, and why the movie earned a PG rating.

?

HH

?Planes?

Opens Friday, Aug. 9, at theaters everywhere; rated PG for some mild action and rude humor; 92 minutes.

At the end of "Planes," you may wonder why it wasn?t released straight to DVD, which is how I?d bet the promised sequel "Planes: Fire & Rescue" will be seen.

Millennials living at home struggle to find new norm | USA TODAY ...

By David Sacks, Lifesize

There they go, and here they come.

A new study by the Pew Research Center shows the growing trend of the boomerang generation. The report, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, notes that 21.6 million Millennials ? people ages 18 to 30 ? lived at home in 2012, which is up from 18.5 million in 2007. Between a third and one half of these home-dwelling Millennials are college students, according to the study. (Students who lived in dorms during the school year were also counted in the report as living at home.)

Pew Research says the increase is because of a combination of cultural, educational and economic factors.

?I think one issue that people are very well aware of is the economic factor,? says Jennifer Tanner, co-founder of Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood.

Jeffery Arnett, professor of psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., coined the term ?emerging adulthood? to describe the period from 18 to 25 when people begin to become more independent.

Tanner explains that a lot of factors contribute to this type of ?social phenomenon,? and while we may be comfortable placing the blame on the emerging adults, it?s often more complex than someone who just isn?t trying hard enough.

Mellissa Walker, a 30-year-old junior at Kennesaw State University near Atlanta studying finance, knows about the economic factor on a personal level.

After making the decision to go back to school, she had to quit her job working as a retail manager because she says they wouldn?t let her keep her management position while going to school, which forced the move back home.

?You cannot have obligations like school or classes or anything like that,? Walker says.

Tanner says that individuals such as Walker are making the ?relatively mature decision? to move back home instead of choosing to stress themselves out trying to make ends meet.

Walker says the decision doesn?t come without some sacrifice of personal freedom and the negative stigma that comes with living at home, but adds, ?It?s one of those situations that I?m not currently in a position to do anything about.?

Mike Eden, 23, a student at Georgia State University, says his parents encouraged him to move back home while at school to save time and money.

?When I had just started college I was working at UPS,? Eden says. ?My dad wanted me to stop working and just concentrate on school because he was worried that it was affecting my sleep and that it would affect my grades.?

The Baby Boomer era of leaving home for college at 18 and starting a family in your early twenties is not the norm anymore, Tanner says. That type of ideal was a blip in history, she adds, and the new norm of the emerging adult is going through a transitional period.

?Right after the Baby Boomers was Generation X, and they?re the first generation that is not going to do better than their parents did, economically,? Tanner says.

Compared to the culture of other countries, specifically in Europe, Tanner says that Americans? individualistic outlook have them wanting to leave the nest much earlier than their neighbors across the pond.

?This is the time of life where people are supposed to be psychologically becoming who they are, developing their sense of self in their heads,? she says. ?And it?s a sociologically perspective when we care about: where are you living, are you employed or not employed, are you married or not married, do you have a baby or not??

The future for the Millennials remains to be seen, but Tanner says progress is being made. ?We?re moving to a place where psychological variables matter more than sociological variables, but we?re not there yet,? she says.

New home prices in London up .5% last month

A monthly new home price index released by Statistics Canada showed the London area was one of the leaders last month.

London tied with Calgary and Saskatoon with a 0.5% increase in June.

Prices decreased 0.2% in Hamilton, Windsor and Vancouver last month as builders in all three regions reported lower selling prices.

Across Canada the index rose 0.2%.

London builders told Statistics Canada that market conditions were responsible for the increase in this area.

It was the largest increase for London since March 2012 when the price index for London jumped 0.6%.

But Statistics Canada noted that apart from those two bumps, the new housing pricing index has been modest for London over the past years, rising about 2%.

Police, firefighters battle back against mayor's behind-the-scenes pension efforts

From: Richardson Stacy

Date: August 2, 2013, 11:09:27 EDT
Subject: Statement Regarding Pension
Please feel free to call me with any questions.
Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Best wishes,
Stacy

Stacy Richardson
Office of Mayor Andy Berke

Dear Mayor Berke,
Firstly, we would like to offer congratulations on presenting your first budget on Wednesday. Clearly, you understand the critical role that public safety plays in our community. There are several key points from the budget that we believe represent your support of our sworn officers: the inclusion of all sworn personnel in the across the board pay raise, the updated technology for fire apparatus, and the increase in manpower for the police force.

We would also like to express our desire for the City to maintain its current budgeted level of funding for the Fire and Police Pension Fund despite the statement from Pension Board that it be funded at $13.1 million. We believe it would be irresponsible for the City to decrease its contribution to the fund and are disappointed by the actions of the Pension Board.

We are committed to working with you, your administration, the Pension Board, our membership, and the Task Force to determine the best path forward for Chattanooga?s first responders. Thus far, your administration has demonstrated a willingness to work together and we look forward to participating in the process to find the best possible solution for our members.

Sincerely,

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke?s office sent emails to police and firefighter unions asking the members to sign a letter the mayor?s office had penned in support of the mayor?s task force to study the pension and to criticize their local pension board.

Chattanooga Firefighters Association President Jack Thompson said after talking with the mayor?s staff, he received the email from Senior Advisor Stacy Richardson and then got a call demanding the union send the support letter back 30 minutes later.

?It?s definitely a concern that they're going to ask us to sign something of that nature,? Thompson said. ?We?re in complete support of the pension board.?

The letter first congratulates the mayor for presenting his first budget and then states the union is critical of the Police and Fire Pension Board.

?Clearly, you understand the critical role that public safety plays in our community,? the letter sent from the Mayor?s office states. ?We believe it would be irresponsible for the City to decrease its contribution to the fund and are disappointed by the actions of the Pension Board.?

Berke?s spokeswoman Lacie Stone said the letter was sent after talking with several local firefighter and police unions that expressed interest in supporting the mayor?s task force.

LG G2 Takes On Samsung Galaxy

Samsung Galaxy S 4: 11 Clever Tricks

Samsung Galaxy S 4: 11 Clever Tricks

(click image for slideshow)LG Wednesday announced the G2, its successor to last year's Optimus G. The new smartphone has some of the best hardware around in addition to innovative new software. This is exactly the type of device LG needs to make if it wants to win back market share from foe Samsung.

The G2 boasts a 5.2-inch, full-HD screen. As with most LG screens, it uses in-place switching technology and is an LCD panel. LG was able to reduce the framing needed around the screen to the thinnest seen on any phone, resulting in a screen that stretches fully from side to side. Thanks to the thin framing, the G2's screen size beats the Galaxy S4's by 0.2 inches.

The G2 is the first device to ship with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 chipset. It has four cores, with each rated at 2.26 GHz. This monster processor is paired with 2 GB of RAM and supports worldwide LTE networks, in addition to GPS and GLONASS navigation systems. Other network connections include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, NFC and HDMI.

The G2 has a 13-megapixel camera that is aided by optical image stabilization and back-side illumination for better low-light performance. It can shoot full 1080p HD video, as can the 2-megapixel camera on front. The device is powered by a 3,000-mAh battery.

The most interesting aspect of the G2's layout is the positioning of its power button and volume toggles. These buttons almost always appear on the left or right edges of a smartphone. LG put them both on the back, where it believes they'll be easier to use. This is something that most people might need some time to adjust to, though.

LG has loaded up the G2 with lots of interesting software. For example, Answer Me will automatically answer the phone when it is picked up and placed next to the owner's ear. The Guest Mode mirrors Kid Zone in Windows Phone 8, and can be used to rope off a safe section in which others can use the phone. There's also Text Link, which will scan text messages for event invites and automatically add them to the calendar app. The camera carries over many of the advanced features seen on LG's other flagship devices, including QSlide Apps, QuickMemo and others.

The G2 will be sold by all four major carriers in the U.S. and comes in black or white. Pricing and availability has not yet been announced.

The G2 shares many of its high-end features with Samsung's Galaxy S4, and surpasses it in a few places. It also proves that the most important innovations to come with smartphones are in the software, not the hardware.

Ed Dept. gives district-level waivers from law

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Education Department is giving eight of California's largest school districts permission to ignore parts of the federal No Child Left Behind education law.

The move announced Tuesday covers more than 1 million students and is the first from Education Secretary Arne Duncan to work with individual districts on exemptions. To this point, Duncan has given 39 states and the District of Columbia permission to work outside the Bush-era law on individual plans to improve schools.

Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento districts were among those given waivers. Others include Fresno, Long Beach, Oakland, Sanger and Santa Ana school districts.

Those districts petitioned Duncan as a group called the California Office to Reform Education.

Other districts in the state still must comply with the law.
